Be prepared to hike approximately 5 miles through the Kennesaw Mountain State Park.  \n\nWho should attend:\n\nScouts planning on attending the Philmont in 2010.  \n\nScouts desiring to complete requirements for Tenderfoot.  \n\nScouts wanting to start the Hiking Merit Badge.\n\nScouts that like to hike.\n\n\n\nThis hike is designed to test the ability of Troop 510 to hike approximately 20 miles in the fall time frame and is a continuation of the Hiking Merritt Badge that began last Fall. The gate at Glade Marina will be open for the cleanup volunteers.  Drivers, turn left as soon as you enter the gate, and find an area where we can all park together for the registration process.\n\n\n\nWhat: We will arrive at the Glade Marina and Mr. Ross will register us as one group.  We cannot register until the entire group arrives at Glade Marina and is present. Mr. Ross will  pick up the shore assignment sheet, trash bags, and patches for the entire group. We will organize into smaller groups as necessary when we find out what and where our assigned shoreline is.  We will have a final group meeting with last minute information at Glade Marina before we depart to our assigned shoreline.\n\n\n\nAll Scouts and Adults should wear  Class B Troop tee-shirts.  Since this is a community work project, jeans are ok.  Wear old tennis shoes that can get dirty, and bring a pair of work gloves.  Check the weather before you leave and bring rain gear, if necessary.  The cleanup will go on, rain or shine.  Mr. Ross will bring bottled water and snacks for everyone during the cleanup.  \n\n\n\nPost Cleanup - At 12:00 every participant is invited to a free cookout that will be held at Riverside Day Use Area on Allatoona Dam Road.  The cookout generally lasts an hour and a half, or longer.  There will be free food, prizes and other fun things to do to show appreciation for all those who came out to help clean up the lake.  All participants will need to show their Allatoona Cleanup patch to enter the cookout.  We will pass them out to each participant before we leave the assigned shore cleanup area.  Don’t lose or misplace these patches!!!  It is your ticket to get in the cookout!  We will not be given any extras. \n\n

We will leave at 8:00 AM Friday the 25th and returning mid afternoon Sunday the 27th.  This is a great trip, please visit the website below for more info on swimming with manatees, when the Troop went 5 years ago, it was one of the best adventures we have ever had.\n\n \n\n http://www.manateetoursusa.com/%20%20%20    Pictures and videos will probably be available for purchase from the tour facility.\n\n \n\nCost will be $75 for each camper (including adults and siblings), children 12 and under may receive a discount.   Payment must be made by Monday January 31st  or a spot is not guaranteed.  Any cancellations after Feb 2nd will not be refunded (sorry, we cannot get our money back from the tour after that).\n\n \n\nThis includes all food, just bring your camping and personal gear.  We will be camping at Sand Hill Scout Reservation in Brooksville, FL.  We will be snorkeling, the snorkel gear and wetsuit will be provided.\n\n \n\nThis will be a family campout, so all parents and siblings are welcome. While we are driving to the campsite at Red Top Mountain State Park, the Scouts will camp out of their backpacks, hike during the day and eat backpacking food (except for Saturday dinner).  We will make arrangements to provide backpacks and other gear to scouts that do not own any.\n\n\n\nEveryone camping will attend the Wild Game Banquet, we will drive back into the church for the banquet.\n\n \n\n\n\nMEN AND BOYS WILD GAME BANQUET\n\n\n\nSaturday Night March 12th at 6:00 PM.  If on the campout, the fee covers this cost, if you are not camping the ticket is $10.00.\n\n\n\nEach year Kennesaw First Baptist holds a Men and Boys Wild Game Banquet.  The banquet is a Church event, not a Scout event, but we have attended as a troop for the last 4 years and everyone loves it.  The food is wonderful, and is all wild game donated by the church members,  There will be plenty of deer, and there are always other things , depending on who got what.  In the past we have had wild hog, elk, turkey, quail, squirrel, alligator and once even bear.  And there is always a mystery meat for everyone to guess.\n\n\n\nThere are always a lot of door prizes, almost all (many years all) the boys will get a door prize and many of the adults will.  These are donated from local businesses and range from hats to power tools, there has been a shotgun, and last year Nick Main and Zach Wagoner each won a hunting trip (and Zach even got a deer!).\n\n\n\nThis event is getting bigger each year, last year I think there were over 300 attendees.  The highlight is always the speaker.  This year the speaker is Lex Luger, the professional Wrestler.  from his story on Wikipedia it should be very interesting, after a long, wild and woolly career in wrestling, and legal and medical problems, he has turned his life around and now travels to Churches giving speeches.\n\n \n\nPlease reply if you are going to the banquet, whether as part of the campout, or just for the banquet. The pioneer camping sites are located approximately 200 yards from the nearest road, so it is recommended that the scouts backpack in their gear. Note: Scouts are not required to go out and purchase a backpack to participate in this event, as there are a couple of options - utilize a loaner backpack from the Troop; pack personal gear in a duffle bag; or the scout can make multiple 200 yard trips to collect their gear. In addition the Scout will be asked to bring a personal survival kit that will fit into a shoe box (suggested contents listed below and to be covered in a Monday Scout meeting prior to the event)\n\n\n\nTo fulfill the Outdoor Wilderness MB each of the scouts will be required to build their own natural shelter and spend one night in the shelter.  The scouts will be given time Saturday afternoon to build shelters using techniques that have little negative impact on the environment. Note: for those scouts who choose not to sleep in their shelters will not complete the merit badge and can perform the requirement during another Troop campout.\n\n\n\nPersonal Survival Kit Suggestions: \n\nThe textbook recommends supplementing the 10 essentials with: \n\n\n\nITEM 1 –A Pencil & 3 Blank Sheets Paper (notes for self & others) - This can be very useful for making notes to yourself or to others who may be searching for you. It is also flammable if you cannot find tinder anywhere else.\n\nITEM 2 – 20 feet of para shoot cord\n\nITEM 3 - A Small, LOUD whistle for signaling. This whistle may have a backup compass as well.\n\nITEM 4 - Mini LED Flashlight - This is a very bright little light, and is great for short durations. For longer duration, build a fire. These can also be used for signaling at night. It can be used with a little para cord as a Tarp Shelter, or as a waterproofing for the roof of whatever you construct for shelter. It can be laid out to collect rainwater, used as a poncho, or employed as a Solar Still. \n\nITEM 7 – Repair kit, including duct tape and basic sewing materials. 12 to 14 feet of duct tape, wrapped around ball point pen - Repairs to just about anything. Patch holes in tarps, fix a point to an arrow or spear, bandage cuts and scrapes, make butterfly bandages for serious wounds. It could be the one that keeps you coming\n\nback every year; Lasagna, Salad, and Garlic Bread, or it may\n\nbe something new!\n\n  \n\n    This is our chance to Recognize and Thank those who\n\ngive so much to Scouting in our District. If you missed out, we may have some extra kits available on Sunday (Mr. Smith knows that part).  Adults that want to build a new car can buy a kit at the Scouts Store or from Hobby Town, assuming they want to start with the basic kit.\n\n\n\nADULTS AND TOOLS NEEDED:  Mr. Reese will be coordinating the workshop effort.  Any adults that can help out will be appreciated.  We need some adults that can spend some time to be there to help and that can bring some tools, etc.  Please let Mr. Reese know if you can bring anything and/or help out.  We know we will have at least one band saw, possibly two, and a weight scale set up.  Beyond that, we could use one or two of the following tools/equipment:  routers, drills, sanders, worktables, lights, power cords, safety goggles, lead weights to share, plus nail polishing stuff or anything else you remember being useful from doing this in Cub Scouts.  All tools will be used either by adults only or by Scouts under close adult supervision, depending on the tool.\n\n
